California is normally a hot, sunny state. However, there has been more rainfall than usual lately. On top of that, spring has only just begun, bringing even more drizzly days along with it. In 2015, USA Today posted an article claiming that recent studies have shown that rain is actually the deadliest weather driving hazard. In 39 of the 50 states, it causes even more fatalities than snow. So what can drivers do to protect themselves on a rainy day?
Go slow. Most accidents on rainy days are caused by speeding, or even going at the speed limit, which is made for ideal weather conditions. A driver’s reaction time will be cut into because of the rain. They won’t be able to brake as easily or quickly. Additionally, they have to worry about hydroplaning, which can cause drifting and loss of vehicular control.
Beware of impaired visibility. It’ll be harder for a driver to see other vehicles on the road. State Farm reminds everyone to make it easier for other people to see them too by turning on the headlights, even during the day. Take extra time out to check other lanes before switching or merging.
Pull over if it’s necessary. Don’t rush, especially when uncomfortable with driving in the rain. It’s better to wait for the heaviest bout to subside than to try pushing forward even if visibility is low. The stress and panic will only make it harder for a driver to react to emergency situations.
