Proper lane positioning can help you avoid motorcycle accidents

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2017 | Firm News, motorcycle accidents

Traveling the roadways of California on a motorcycle requires paying strict attention to your surroundings. Unfortunately, motorcyclists do not always receive the attention and respect they deserve, which means they have to take every measure possible to look out for their own safety. And one of the most important things that you can do when you are riding on a highway is position yourself correctly in your lane.

For example, when driving next to another vehicle, you need to be aware of the driver’s blind spots. It is very difficult, if not impossible, for a driver to spot you if you are riding just behind his or her front doors. You never want to linger in this area, but rather drive through the blind spot.

Lane position is also important when you are behind a vehicle. You want to establish enough following distance so as to have time to react to any suddens stops or other potential hazards.

But if you are in a slow-and-go situation where creating a safe following distance is not possible, you can place yourself in the right or left side of the lane. By doing this you can give yourself a pathway to safety between the lanes, should you need it.

Proper lane positioning is vital for staying clear of danger when riding your motorcycle on the highway. But the roads are filled with negligent drivers who may be distracted, impaired, aggressive or just plain careless.

If you should be struck and injured by such a driver, you may want to have a knowledgeable personal injury attorney handle your insurance claim. The attorney may be able to make sure that you receive the maximum amount you are entitled to. And if it best suits your interests, the attorney could file a lawsuit on your behalf against the negligent driver who caused the accident.
