Dealing with car crashes due to DUI

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2016 | car accidents, Firm News

Car accidents are the most common traffic collisions in the U.S. The major causes of car accidents include driving under the influence, distractions like cell phones and the negligence of the driver.

The U.S. government has strict laws in place for people that drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The penalty for driving under the influence depends on a variety of factors. It may only be a fine but in severe cases, the driver could spend some time in prison. Similarly, several states have banned the use of cell phones while driving, as they distract the driver and could lead to a car crash.

The most important thing to do after a car crash is to visit a doctor, even if you feel that you are fine. Sometimes car accidents can lead to severe injuries that only show their effects after a few hours. Get yourself looked over to make sure that no injuries were incurred. If the accident was not your fault, you have the right to claim compensation from the guilty party. If you do not visit a hospital quickly, they might get a chance to argue that the injury was not caused by the accident.

If you feel that you were the victim in the accident, you may want an attorney to file for compensation. This needs to be done as soon as possible because you do not want to give the other driver time to think of an excuse. If the other driver was driving under the influence, it makes your claim much stronger.
