There are key steps to take after a motor vehicle accident

On Behalf of | Oct 12, 2017 | Firm News, Motor Vehicle Accidents

You hope that you are never part of a motor vehicle accident, but you also realize that this could happen at any time.

The more time you spend on the road, the better chance there is that something will eventually go wrong.

If you are ever involved in a motor vehicle accident, there are some key steps you need to take without delay. These include the following:

  • Check yourself and your passengers for injuries
  • Move your vehicle to safety, such as the shoulder of the road
  • Call 911 so that police and an ambulance arrive at the scene
  • Document the accident, including taking photos and making notes
  • Exchange information with the other driver
  • Contact your insurance company

These steps sound simple enough, but you could run into some challenges along the way.

For example, if you suffered a severe injury, such as a broken bone, you may not be able to move your vehicle to safety. In this case, there is nothing wrong with staying where you are until help arrives.

Also, don’t feel like you have to share any information with the other driver. There is time for your insurance company to work out these details in the future. You simply want to collect his or her name, contact information, and insurance details.

If the other driver was responsible for the car accident, you need to take the right steps regarding receiving compensation for your injuries and any other damages.

While your health and well-being will always come first, you don’t want to overlook the importance of protecting your legal rights. Moving on without first considering all your options is a mistake you don’t want to make.
