3 tips for staying safe this New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve can be fun for those headed to parties, and at events, alcohol often makes a debut. Staying safe should be a priority, and even though many young adults feel they face little risk, the truth is that all people are at risk during New Year's Eve, even you. Here are four tips to help keep you safe.

Avoid drinking too much

While an accident caused by another person who is drunk behind the wheel isn't your fault, drinking too much can put you at a higher risk of being involved in an accident, too. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and slows your reflexes. This means that if you're walking home, you might not notice a car speeding toward the intersection or be able to get out of the way in time. Make sure you walk sober, and always make sure you have a safe ride home.

Drunk drivers are out there, be prepared

Between 50 and 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. You can be prepared for New Year's Eve by planning a safe route home away from the roads, or opt to take the shortest route with the least traffic. One of the best ways to stay safe is to avoid going out at all, so if you can stay overnight locally after a party or visiting a friend, it's a good idea to stay off the roads.

Never let friends drive drunk or get into the vehicle with them

Of course, many people drink too much during the festivities of New Year's Eve, and some will think they can drive safely. While you may not be able to stop them, make sure you say something and try to keep them off the roads. These individuals could hurt others or themselves. Never get into a vehicle with an intoxicated friend. You can offer to drive him or her home if you're sober. If not, suggest that you get a cab for the ride home.

These are a few tips for staying safe during New Year's Eve. If you're still hurt, you have legal options you can pursue against drivers who were driving recklessly.
