Group motorcycle rides require planning and precautions

Riding a motorcycle is great anytime, but sharing an adventure with other riders can really increase the fun factor. Going for a group ride can be a wonderful experience and can create fond memories. But if you want to ride with your friends, there are some techniques that you should apply to keep everyone as safe as possible.

The day of a group ride should start with all riders arriving a predetermined location on time and with a full tank of gas. Once assembled, a game plan should be discussed, which includes identifying the route, hand signals and fuel and rest stops. There should also be a procedure in place for regrouping in the event of someone getting separated from the group.

It is best for groups to consist of five to seven riders. If your club has more riders, then break into smaller sub-groups. In each group, one experienced rider should be designated as the lead, and another should be chosen to bring up the rear.

While out on the road, you want to ride in a staggered formation most of the time. But you should switch to single file when on curvy roads or if the road or weather conditions make riding difficult. When in single file, riders should have at least a 2-second buffer between one another.

It is also important for everyone in the group to look out for each other, and more experienced riders should keep a special eye out for the newbies. Take care not to let any riders fall too far behind by checking your rearview mirror and slowing down if someone is lagging.

Hopefully, you have many successful group rides in your future. But if while riding, you are involved in an accident caused by a negligent driver, you will likely suffer some degree of injury. In order to maximize the benefits you receive for compensation, you may want to have an experienced personal injury attorney handle your claim. An attorney can assess your needs and work to get you the money you need for medical and other related costs.
