Self-care is important in the wake of losing a loved one

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2016 | Firm News, wrongful death

The unexpected loss of a loved one can leave a family in a state of utter devastation. Most of us understand that having a family member die can cause a sense of sadness. But many people who actually go through the experience are surprised at just how intense their feelings are. Shock, confusion, despair and disbelief are among the many normal emotional responses people may experience.

And so, too, is anger, which is very understandable if the family member died due to the negligent or deliberate acts of another. At such times, it is very important for those who are grieving to take care of themselves. And if you recently lost a family member, here are a few suggestions that may help you cope with your situation:

  • Let others know how you are feeling.
  • Join support groups that are dedicated to helping people who are experiencing the same things you are.
  • Get together with family and friends who understand what you are going through.
  • If your grief becomes overwhelming, seek the help of a mental health professional.
  • Pay attention to your health. Be sure to eat well and keep in touch with your family doctor.
  • Be patient and understand that it may take you some time to absorb the loss and adapt to your new circumstances.

And if your loss was caused by a negligent driver, you may wish to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit. While no amount of money could ever make up for your loss, a successfully settled suit could help you handle the many expenses and the financial loss generated by your loved one’s death.
